Typhoon Bavi Update

Typhoon Bavi has caused delays to a large amount of containership capacity in major North Asia ports. Experts estimate that gateways will need two weeks to clear the backlog, mostly concentrated in Shanghai and Ningbo.
On Friday, China’s National Meteorological Centre issued the second-severest typhoon warning and Typhoon Bavi made landfall early Sunday.
On Thursday, Shanghai had begun clearing berths, telling ships to leave major terminals by Friday night. Ningbo paused all container collection and delivery operations from Friday, only resuming operations yesterday.
Some vessels have omitted Shanghai and Ningbo calls, with some cargo discharged and transhipped to the final port of discharge.
Experts say Shanghai resumed port operations yesterday, but warned that port gates reopening doesn’t mean vessel schedules will immediately return to normal and to expect delays as terminals work through accumulated cargo.
