Low Water Levels in Europe

We have received notice of disruption to commercial barge traffic in major European inland waterways, such as the Rhine, caused by severely low water levels.
Experts say decades of delays in modernising infrastructure, combined with the increasing impact of climate change have placed inland waterway services at risk with the current low water situation one of the most severe in decades.
Access to a number of seaports remains suboptimal, resulting in extended waiting times, diminishing the appeal of inland waterway transport.
Freight is being diverted onto already congested roads and railways rather than by barge, leading to issues with space and empty container availability.
Additionally, there was a 2-day strike in Hamburg last week, compounding delays.
We have received advice to book shipments as early as possible, and to anticipate vessel delays and upward pressure in rates for shipments out of Europe.Please note that this may cause delays to shipments.
