Situation at DP World Ports

Situation at DP World Ports
- MUA Issues Statement on Automation
The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has released a media statement addressing DP World Australia’s proposed investment of over $600 million to automate operations across its container terminals in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
The statement raises concerns about the potential impacts of the program, suggesting that the proposed changes will lead to lower productivity, increased costs, and jeopardise the safety of workers, claiming the company has not fulfilled its consultation obligations.
- DP World Port Delays
Given the scale of DP World’s key east coast ports, and the MUA’s opposition to the proposal, there is understandable concern that industrial tensions could escalate, potentially leading to disruptions at container terminals.
We have already been advised of delays at Sydney and Melbourne ports over the past few days, and if the situation between the MUA and DP World continues to deteriorate, we expect these delays to worsen.
- Stop Work Meeting
We have received notice from Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) that an authorised stop work meeting at the DP World Sydney terminal will be held from 10:00am – 02:00pm on Thursday, 1st May 2025.
All terminal operations will cease during this period.
