Protected Industrial Action at Patrick Terminals – Update
We have received an update today from FTA advising that Patrick Terminals have now taken this Industrial Action dispute with Maritime Union of Australia to Fair Work Commission and have asked for an urgent hearing. They have requested the termination of industrial action and have also asked the Government for intervention as its causing severe damage to Australian Economy.
If Fair Work Commission decides to intervene and asks for termination of the strikes, normal operations will resume for 21 days which is desperately needed to ease up some congestion at Sydney port. After this period, the duration of no-strikes can be further extended for another 21 days if both parties agree and Fair Work will then eventually arbitrate on any outstanding issues.
On the other hand, Industrial action at Patrick terminals is still going on. Additional updated action include:
- Patrick Sydney Terminal – Road operations will cease today from 8 pm onward till 6 am tomorrow morning.
As advised earlier, some shipping lines are planning for more port omissions and discharging containers at alternative ports in order to minimize the impact of current industrial action and congestion. They will charge Transport Additional Surcharge if they have to discharge on a different port and schedule it on the next possible vessel for the final destination. Such costs if incurred will have to be passed on unfortunately.
We will keep you updated as we hear further on these issues.
