Canadian Strike Action – Canadian Government Moves to End Strike
Attention: Shipping Manager
We have received notice this morning from Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) that the Canadian Government has stepped in to end the lockout of workers at the country’s two biggest ports of Vancouver and Montreal.
Port workers at Montreal were locked out on November 10th and workers in Vancouver have been locked out since November 4th, resulting in the government directing the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to order the resumption of all operations at the ports of Vancouver and Montreal and move the talks to binding arbitration.
Port authorities expect cargo handling will gradually resume in the coming days, depending on the CIRB decision. Ports are expected to take several weeks to clear the backlog of containers and restore normal operations.
Please note that this is also having a roll on effect to US departures, due to vessel and intermodal delays.
We will keep you updated with any further information.
Regards,
